Ruben Dias contract extension triggered
Benfica star centreback Ruben Dias recently saw his contract with the club extended, something that could have easily gone unnoticed.
According to A Bola, the contract extension came as a result of the 22-year old's outings last season.
His extensive game time for the club meant that he ended up triggering an automatic one year contract extension, having played more than 50 games for the club in total.
His previous contract expired in 2023, but as Luis Filipe Vieira recently reiterated, his contract now expires in 2024.
His release clause remains unchanged of course, sitting at €66million, a fee Benfica believe is attainable by many of Europe's most illustrious clubs.
Vieira is therefore keen to still sort out a new deal with the player, looking to increase his release clause further, to approximately €88M.
The club and player came close to reaching an agreement for a contact extension containing an increased termination fee, but the player eventually rejected the proposal, advised that now was not the appropriate time to sign a new contract with the club.
He was always happy to remain at the club - for one more season - but what will come of his future next summer is far more difficult to predict.
