Lille 2-1 Amiens

Lille 2-1 Amiens

Lille continued their stunning season as they battled to victory against lowly Amiens to consolidate 2nd place in Ligue 1.

Lille initially fell behind courtesy of a goal from Juan Otero, Jose Fonte’s presence in the heart of defence not enough to prevent Lille from falling behind.

However, the other Portuguese starter on the pitch eventually rectified the situation, with Rafael Leao smashing home from around the penalty spot after a low cross into the box, giving Lille fans hope that they could get back into the game and attempt to close the gap on the formidable league leaders in PSG.

That goal was Leao’s fourth goal in just four league games, a terrific run of form from the 19-year old striker and a clear sign that he was once again enjoying his football.

Having levelled just before half time, many would have expected Lille to ease to victory after the restart, but a resilient Amiens made the game very difficult for high-flying Lille, who have 5 Portuguese players on their books - Jose Fonte, Rafael Leao, Rui Fonte, Edgar Ie and Xeka.

The last of those was the only other Portuguese player to be introduced on the night, coming on for Thiago Maia in the 72nd minute to freshen up the midfield.

And his introduction eventually proved vital. With the match reaching the last 5 minutes, it was Xeka that became the hero, meeting Jeremy Pied’s cross with a delightful powerful header to salvage all 3 points for his side, who are vying for a place in next season’s Champions League.

It means that two Portuguese players got themselves on the scoresheet for Lille, who now sit 2nd in the league on 40 points from 21 games, 4 points clear of Saint-Etienne in third.
