Southampton interested in signing Sporting's Jovane Cabral

English Premier League club Southampton are looking to make a move for Sporting CP star Jovane Cabral this window, and are considering an approach to secure the signing of the 22-year old.

The Cape Verde-born winger, who is eligible to represent Portugal, had a stunning end to last campaign, scoring 5 gols in 7 league matches post-lockdown. Across the entire season, which was hindered through injury, the right-sided forward scored 6 and assisted 3 in 16 Primeira Liga outings, and is seen as a key part of Ruben Amorim’s plans.

Known for his explosive and direct dribbling style alongside his speed and powerful shooting ability, particularly from set-pieces, Sporting are understood to be hoping for upwards of 20 million euros for Cabral, a fee which Southampton are able to match, though the English outfit may be hoping to get him for a reduced fee.

Amorim, it is known, is a big fan of the Cape Verdean, and would like to make him a significant part of his plans, but the board may feel that an official offer from Southampton, should it arrive, will be too good to turn down.

Cabral has actually played once for the Cape Verde senior team - but because it came in a friendly clash against Luxembourg, he is still able to switch allegiances and represent the Portugal national team.

Cabral, who arrived at Sporting in 2014 from Cape Verde side Grémio Nhagar, has been linked with various English clubs, including West Ham and Fulham, as well as Southampton.
