Benfica concede three goals in three consecutive games for the first time in over 70 years

After a stunning 2-3 defeat at home to Braga, Benfica have now suffered the ignominious record of conceding three goals in three consecutive games - something which they haven’t done since the Portuguese national division first began.

After losing 3-0 to Boavista last weekend, Benfica followed it up with a last-gasp 3-3 home draw with Rangers - and completed the run with a 2-3 loss to SC Braga, again at the Estadio da Luz.

The last time Benfica conceded three goals in 3 consecutive games was all the way back in 1946 - when the Portuguese national division was first founded.

On that occasion, Benfica conceded 3 goals in an extraordinary 5 consecutive games, starting with back-to-back 6-3 victories over Atletico CP and Oriental in November 1946 while playing in the Lisbon district division. They then finished their time in the regional division with a 3-1 home defeat to Sporting CP.

Upon the start of the Portuguese First Division, also in November 1946, they started in equally disappointing fashion, losing 3-2 to FC Porto before a substantial 6-3 loss to Estoril Praia. It ensured that Benfica conceded 18 goals across 5 games, marking the last time Benfica conceded 3 goals in 3 (or more) games - until today.

After a much-needed international break, Benfica will be facing Paredes in the Portuguese Cup, followed by an away clash with Rangers in the Europa League and a trip to Maritimo in the Primeira Liga.
