Tottenham looking to sign Benfica's Carlos Vinicius?

Jose Mourinho has recently revealed that Spurs remain extremely interested in signing a new striker this season to compete with, and provide cover for, captain Harry Kane - which has coincided with Benfica receiving significant interest in Brazilian star Carlos Vinicius.

Mourinho has recently said “I want, I need a striker”, and that he “honestly believes” that they are going to get one, while Benfica are actively willing to sell Vinicius having significantly invested in the squad this summer with several new signings.

Interest in the Benfica striker is thought to be extensive, with Benfica looking to cash in on the striker while his stock remains high, and English clubs in particular are understood to be keen on the 25-year old.

Indeed, according to TVI24, three English Premier League clubs have already made enquiries for the services of Vinicius - with one unnamed side even making an official bid of 45 million euros. That offer was swiftly rejected though, with Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira holding out for around 60 million euros for the striker.

Though the club making an official approach is unknown, Tottenham Hotspur have for a long time been widely seen as a very possible destination for Vinicius, with Mourinho in particular a major factor, the Portuguese coach having already come to Benfica to sign Gedson Fernandes on loan.

And looking at the English Premier League clubs in need of a striker that could make a realistic approach for Carlos Vinicius considering the asking price, Tottenham Hotspur only further fit the bill - though are likely to be put off by Benfica’s current asking price.

However, although Benfica rejected an offer of 60 million euros for Vinicius from Wolverhampton Wanderers back in January, the Lisbon outfit may now be willing to entertain lower proposals, with 50 to 55 million potentially enough to take Vinicius away from the club.

Alongside Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool are also considered leading English contenders to sign the player that Benfica signed from Napoli for 15 million euros only last summer.

Carlos Vinicius had a stunning debut season in Portugal, finishing as Primeira Liga top scorer with 18 goals and 5 assists in 32 games, averaging a goal or assist every 78 minutes.
